How to Clean a Dishwasher Filter

Confirm the dishwasher has a consumer-removable filter

Pull out the lower rack and look at the base of the tub, but do not force a round screen just because it resembles filters shown online. Check the model manual for the filter location and removal direction. Some systems are not meant to be routinely removed by the owner.

Remove the filter while the machine is cool and off

Let a recent cycle cool. Turn the dishwasher off and remove the lower rack. Unlock or twist the filter exactly as shown for the model and lift it without spilling trapped debris back into the sump.

Rinse instead of attacking the mesh

Use warm running water and a soft brush for stubborn residue. Avoid wire brushes, abrasive pads, or sharp picks that can tear filter mesh. If greasy film remains, use a mild detergent only if the manufacturer permits it.

Clean the area below without pushing debris into the pump

Wipe loose food from the accessible filter well. Check for labels, glass, bones, or other objects only where you can reach safely. Do not reach blindly into pump openings or dismantle covers that are not part of routine filter service.

Reinstall and lock it fully

Seat the filter in the correct orientation and rotate or latch it until the lock marks align. A loose filter can allow debris into the circulation system or interfere with the spray arm. Reinstall the lower rack and spin the lower arm by hand to make sure nothing obstructs it.

If odors or poor washing remain

Check spray-arm holes, detergent use, water temperature guidance, loading, and whether the dishwasher is draining fully. Standing dirty water, leakage, grinding, or repeated error codes are not solved by scrubbing the filter harder.

Use filter condition to improve loading habits

What you find in the filter can tell you something. Large food scraps may mean dishes are being loaded with more debris than the machine is designed to process. Glass fragments can point to brokenware and deserve careful removal. Greasy sludge can be related to detergent, water conditions, low-temperature cycles, or heavy soil. Cleaning the filter resets the symptom; changing the cause can keep it cleaner longer.

Run a short verification cycle after reassembly

After the filter and lower rack are back in place, run the machine empty or with a normal load using the manufacturer’s recommended cycle. Listen during the first fill and circulation period. Stop if you hear a new grinding or scraping sound, because the filter or spray arm may not be seated correctly. At the end, verify that the tub drained normally and that no leak appeared around the door or under the machine.
