How to Fix a Squeaky Door Hinge

Find the hinge making the noise

Open and close the door slowly while listening at each hinge. Put a finger lightly on the hinge leaf and you can often feel the vibration. A squeak can also come from the latch rubbing the strike or the door rubbing the frame, so confirm the source before lubricating every moving part in sight.

Try lubrication before disassembly

Apply a small amount of suitable lubricant where the hinge pin enters the knuckles, then move the door several times to work it in. Wipe away excess so it does not run down paint or collect dust. More lubricant is not automatically better.

If the squeak returns immediately, clean the pin

Support the door in its normal position and service one hinge at a time. Drive the pin upward carefully using an appropriate punch, wipe rust and old residue from the pin, add a very light lubricant film, and reinstall it. Never pull all hinge pins from a hanging door at once.

Look for wear while the pin is out

A deeply scored, bent, or rusty pin can keep making noise. Loose hinge screws can also let the leaves move against the door or frame. Tighten ordinary loose screws carefully. If screws spin without tightening, the hinge attachment needs repair rather than more lubricant.

Squeak plus rubbing means alignment work

Choose a lubricant that stays where you put it

For ordinary interior hinges, a small amount of light machine oil, silicone-compatible product, or dry lubricant intended for hardware can work. Avoid spraying a large cloud around painted walls and floors. Put lubricant at the pin joints, move the door, then wipe the hinge dry on the outside. If the hinge is outdoors or rusty, a corrosion-focused product may be useful, but exterior hardware condition and door alignment still matter.

Protect paint and flooring while you work

Put a rag under the hinge before applying lubricant or driving a pin. Penetrating products can run down the door edge and leave marks on paint or flooring. If a hinge pin is painted in place, score the paint film around the pin head before tapping it so you do not tear a large chip from the hinge leaf or door finish. A small setup step keeps a tiny maintenance job from creating a cosmetic repair.
