How to Install a Handheld Showerhead

Most handheld shower kits attach at the existing shower arm and do not require opening the wall. The job is mainly about following the fitting order and avoiding excess force on the pipe in the wall.

Tools you will probably need

• adjustable wrench or strap wrench
• rag

Materials

• handheld shower kit
• thread seal tape only if specified

Project steps

1. Remove the existing showerhead while supporting the shower arm.
2. Clean the exposed threads and follow the kit instructions for washers and thread seal tape.
3. Install the diverter or holder by hand first, then connect the hose and handheld head.
4. Turn on the water and check every connection for drips before tightening further.

Common mistakes

• Leaving out a supplied rubber washer
• Using tape where a washer is intended to make the seal
• Twisting the shower arm inside the wall

When to call someone

Call a plumber if the shower arm is loose or corroded, the leak is inside the wall, or the existing plumbing moves when you try to remove the old head.
