How to Build a Simple Raised Garden Bed

A basic raised bed is a forgiving first outdoor build. Keep the rectangle square, choose materials that can handle soil and weather, and place the bed where plants will get the light they need.

Tools you will probably need

• drill/driver
• saw or store-cut lumber
• tape measure
• level

Materials

• rot-resistant lumber or bed kit
• exterior-rated screws
• soil mix suited to what you will grow

Project steps

1. Choose a reasonably level location and confirm sunlight, drainage, and access.
2. Cut or purchase the side boards to size and assemble the corners with exterior-rated fasteners.
3. Measure diagonally corner to corner in both directions to square the bed.
4. Level the frame enough that water and soil will not consistently collect on one side.
5. Fill with an appropriate soil blend and leave a little room below the top edge.

Common mistakes

• Making the bed so wide that the center is hard to reach
• Using untreated interior fasteners outdoors
• Filling with dense native soil alone and creating drainage problems
