How to Replace Window Screen Mesh

Replacing torn screen mesh is inexpensive and satisfying. The main challenge is getting the screen taut without pulling the frame out of square.

Tools you will probably need

• spline roller
• utility knife used carefully
• flat screwdriver or pick for old spline

Materials

• replacement screen mesh
• spline sized for the frame

Project steps

1. Remove the screen frame and pull out the old spline and mesh.
2. Lay new mesh over the frame with extra material on every side.
3. Roll new spline into the channel gradually, keeping the mesh smooth rather than stretching it aggressively.
4. Trim the excess mesh carefully just outside the spline channel and reinstall the screen.

Common mistakes

• Reusing brittle old spline
• Pulling the mesh so tight that the frame bows
• Cutting the finished mesh before the spline is fully seated

A window or screen shop may be easier if the frame itself is bent, broken, unusually large, or part of a specialty window system.
